Satpura National Park

Satpura Tiger Reserve

It is the most spectacular Tiger Reserve in India, still little-known and hence attracts relatively few visitors. The national park is made up of 3 areas: the Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve and Satpura. Because of its large spread, Satpura has a speckled landscape; from grasslands to open woodlands. With the Denwa River in the north and the Tawa River in the west, Satpura also has a river ecosystem. What really sets Satpura apart is the varied wildlife viewing & adventure options – other than vehicle safaris, the national park also offers walking safaris, canoeing on the river and boat safaris.

Birds such as Indian Skimmer, Bar-headed Goose, Grey Junglefowl, both Red and Painted Spurfowl, Hornbills, Babblers and Bee-eaters are among its avian specialties. The Satpura supports some of Asia’s rarest animals and birds like the Forest Spotted Owlet, Green Munia, Rusty Spotted Cat and Caracal. The northern part of Satpura harbours an endangered arboreal mammal, the Indian Giant Squirrel. Satpura NP is one of the few Indian parks to offer a range of adventure activities apart from game drives by 4WD vehicles. These include walking safaris for duration of 3 to 4 days, overnight stay at a British-era forest rest house at Churna.

Satpura Tiger Reserve

The Forest

The park is part of the Satpura Range, range of hills, part of the Deccan plateau, western India. The hills stretch for some 560 miles (900 km) across the widest part of peninsular India. The range, the name of which means “Seven Folds,” forms the watershed between the Narmada (north) and Tapti (south) rivers. With peaks more than 4,000 feet (1,200 metres) high. Satpura Tiger Reserve is part of one of the most significant contiguous blocks of forest left in India and is still connected to other reserves by forest corridors. It represents the largest block of tiger-inhabited forest left in the world, it provides 1427 km² of unique Central Indian Highland ecosystem.
